AI INTELLIGENCE

The editorial function is the only thing AI cannot scale.

We build the governance, verification and accountability infrastructure that keeps content trustworthy, whoever or whatever generates it.

The problem we solve

Your content isn’t broken. Your system is.

We are living through a fundamental shift in how content gets made. The cost of producing it is collapsing. AI can generate in seconds what used to take days.

But the ability to verify that content is actually true to your intent, to govern it consistently across teams and channels, to be accountable for what goes out under your name: that capacity is not scaling with the output. It is falling further behind.

Most organisations respond by adding more. More writers. More tools. More agency briefs. More AI platforms. None of it works, because volume was never the constraint. The constraint is the infrastructure that determines whether content serves the organisation’s actual intent or just fills the space.

01

Narrative

Most organisations have a point of view. Few have a documented framework that makes it operational. Narrative work defines your core positioning, message hierarchy, and the standards that determine whether any piece of content — human or AI-generated — is actually on-brand before it goes out.

02

Structure

Without structure, content scales into inconsistency. This layer builds the editorial architecture that makes consistency possible: content standards, taxonomy, templates, ownership models, and the governance frameworks that ensure different teams, channels, and regions stay aligned without requiring constant oversight.

03

Workflow

Strategy without execution infrastructure stalls. Workflow builds the operational layer: approval gates, sign-off protocols, publishing rights, and measurement systems. It establishes who owns quality at each stage and creates the accountability loop that keeps the system running after the engagement ends.

Who we are

Intentionally small. Deliberately senior-led.

Every engagement is run by practitioners with real experience across strategy, editorial, operations, and activation. We’ve worked inside organisations, alongside agencies, and directly with leadership teams across B2B technology, professional services, and complex institutional environments. That perspective, knowing how content actually breaks down inside real organisations, shapes how we think, how we ask questions, and what we build.

We don’t manage client relationships from a distance and deliver work through junior teams. The people you meet at the start are the people doing the work.

Our approach

Most agencies produce output. We build infrastructure.

The distinction matters. Output disappears when the engagement ends. Infrastructure stays. Our goal in every engagement is to transfer the system: the frameworks, the standards, the workflows, and the capability to run them. So the organisation can operate independently at the quality level we establish together.

We also bring an honest, structured assessment of how AI is being used inside the client organisation. What tools are in play. Where AI-generated content is entering the system. Whether editorial governance is being applied before output goes out or after. Most organisations discover the gap is larger than they realised. Closing it is precisely what we’re built to do.

Why the name

The red pen has always been the editorial function.

The correction. The human judgement applied before something goes out into the world.

In an economy where execution is becoming abundant and cheap, that function — the capacity to verify, to govern, and to stand behind what gets published — is what becomes scarce. And therefore valuable.

We’ve been Red Pen since 2007. The name was always right. It just took a while for the world to catch up.

About the practitioner

Brian Johnsen

Founder, Red Pen

Brian Johnsen has spent over two decades helping complex organisations close the gap between what they mean to say and what they actually publish. He has worked with technology companies, professional services firms and regional institutions across Singapore and Southeast Asia on content strategy, narrative architecture and editorial governance.

Red Pen is built around that practice, deliberately small, intentionally senior-led. Every engagement is scoped, run and delivered by the same practitioner. No juniors. No handoffs. No account managers between you and the person doing the work.

Singapore-based. Working across SG and MY.
